I can obtain and through countless of hours of staying back after class due to failed test papers, and constant nagging on common mistakes. My grades for math have definitely approved and I could not have achieved such improvement without the help of Mr Phua. Mr Phua will also constantly bring upon jokes in class to make the class more lively to remove huge the amounts of stress that we have. He also treats us with goodies and congratulate us by distributing Starbucks cards to those who have achieved their desired grades just to motivate us in repeating the same success for future rewards.
I would personally want to thank mr phua for making my two years in RMSS a fruitful and enjoyable experience. He has definitely changed my perspective of math as a subject and is definitely one of the best teachers I know so far in my whole student life.
Every time I have a topic I'm not sure about, Mr Phua would without fail, get me to come to the centre and do practices with his help. Most of the time, he would just know exactly what I'm confused about based on the questions I ask him, and teach me the basis of that part clearly, till I understand. To him, it is imperative that he helps us till we score good grades, or at least improve from our precious grades. Besides being an extremely dedicated teacher, he is also very encouraging, and is always there to give moral support. For example, he would make sure we are not too exhausted/have sufficient time to study for our other subjects. Furthermore, he sometimes help us relax by sharing with us funny stories and playing what he likes to call, "inspirational music".
All in all, his passion transcends all boundaries and he is willing to do (almost) anything to help you score your desired grade. Wherever you are right now, be it a B3 or an F9 (like how I started out and am passing now), fred not, for there is light at the end of the tunnel with Mr Phua.
P.s. I really enjoy his funky and ever so cool fashion sense. Seriously, a teacher that is hipster + dedicated, what's not to like?
Math has always been my weakest link and my foundation was in scraps. There was always a perpetual "F" grade on my paper, which stood stoic despite my many efforts. I found myself hopping to and fro many tuition centres in bid to find the 'perfect' math tutor.
However, my problems ceased once I started attending lessons at RMSS.
Through countless presentations, practice drills and of course, Raymond's guidance, I improved. My scrappy foundation had been connected as he cleared many misconceptions and introduced new insights, which were applicable in solving challenging questions. Raymond also instilled a sense of discipline and accountability in all his students. His passion to teach has inspired me to be more driven and motivated to do my best.
Gradually, my Fs turned into As and my confidence, soared.
To sum it all up, Raymond has managed to make an almost impossible feat (like doing well in math) possible and I am more than grateful. ☺
Fast forward to 2014, I joined Mr Lee's class. I faced many challenges, and one of the hardest thing to overcome is to accept Mr Lee's teaching. He does not give solutions easily, in other words, he wants us to figure out the solutions on our own. Other than that, we had to present our answers to the whole class each time we were given questions to be completed as homework. At first, I was really afraid to present my answers, as I did not know how to do many questions. Through the presentations, I was "forced" to complete my homework properly and know my formulas well. Slowly, I gained confidence in speaking in front of the whole class and most importantly, I am not afraid to make mistakes. I often got scolded for not knowing my basics will, but I know he meant well for me. I may not be the smartest and the most hardworking student, but Mr Lee has never once given up on me. All the harsh words were a form of motivation for me to work even harder. It's been a tough time preparing for O levels, but Mr Lee never forget to make his classes interesting by sharing his personal experiences and also teaching us life skills.
All these skills and lessons that I've acquired have helped me in my daily life. On top of that, RMSS has a very conducive environment for their students to learn better and excel. I've always thought that one-to-one tuition classes were the one for me, but RMSS has changed the way I think of group tuition. It is way more effective and I could learn from my tuition mates as well. I appreciate all the help that both my tutors have given me all these years and I will always do my best. Thank you RMSS!
The first few lessons passed with me avoiding being called for any questions that I had not even attempted. But alas, my lucky ran out in subsequent lessons when I was finally called for questions that I had left blank. The first time, he scolded me and made me stay back after class when he knew I had not even attempted the question. He told me frankly that I would definitely not improve without even trying the questions I didn't know.
Another time, he forced me to present my answers for a question, which I had not tried at all by making me think on the spot when I wrote the answers on the whiteboard. As I didn't know one of the math formulas, thus i could not complete the question. As I could not answer him when he asked me what's the math formula repeatedly, however, looking at me looking stumped, he asked a girl who was there for extra class to tell me the math formula. When she successfully told me the math formula, I felt amused on why Mr Lee didn't want me to just tell me the math formula himself. However, when he said 'Eh, Yu Yang, she is a Sec 2 and you're a Sec 4 leh!', that wiped the little amused smile that had formed on my face out of my face. Let's just say I felt really embarrassed when i returned to my seat.
I honestly hated having to present answers after that, but hoping to not lose so much face in subsequent lessons again, I decided to at least try the questions that I didn't know how to do. This is just how Mr Lee is, you can never cheat his system and slacken off, as he would find some way to force you to do your work.
Although I still dread having to do presentation, it has actually helped me a lot in my math, as I can better understand why a question should be done a specific way as I present to the class.
The intensive math lessons were not those kind of where the students mind-set was: "my parents force me one". Instead, "I can't wait for my next lesson!"
Mr Phua, my math tutor, is a very dedicated tutor and shows love and concern for his students. Not just did I learn math from him, but I’ve learnt so many other things from his invaluable years of teaching.
Whenever, I have a question, he will always be there for me, be it in class, before class or even after class.
Since joining RMSS, I have made significant progress in my math. At the End-of-year in Secondary 3, before joining RMSS, I had C5 for E math, and D7 for A Math. In my most recent prelim 2, I achieved a A1 for E math and B4 for my A math.
I would definitely introduce my classmates and friends who need help in their math to RMSS.

Patient and dedicated, Mr Tham would always explain the concepts and solutions in great details no matter how long it took and he never gave up on a student despite how slow their improvement progress might be. He taught with great vigor, in class, making sure all of us understood the concepts and rationale behind each step before moving on. The confidence he had in each and every student was heartwarming. Signing up for RMSS was extremely serendipitous, I am very thankful to have him as a tutor.
However she persevered and continued relentlessly on her weekly 2hrs tuition with Desmond Tham in 2015. She has told me that Desmond Tham has made it soooo easy for her to understand / remember both Physics and Chemistry with his simple and yet interesting explanations.
After a good 10 months with Desmond, she came in top in her class for her 2015 'O' Levels Physics Prelims. Chemistry is showing good sign of a possible A as well.
Anyhow in summary, I have absolutely no regrets enrolling her with RMSS as she now loves these subjects and is a happy and confident kid if she's ever required to discuss on these topics.
Thank you Desmond for all your hard work and dedication. How I wish more teachers are like you.
Deep appreciation.. from her mummy Germaine ;)
I knew I wanted to change my results and my mindset of "I'm never a math kinda person". Through my 1 and a half years with Mr Ng and his guidance, I managed to attain a grade of A1 for my Emath preliminary examinations. It's amazing to look back at my journey in RMSS, and see how far I have gone. With that, I would like to say thank you Mr Ng, for your continuous help be it in regular class or extra classes when I was in dire need of help, to your funny jokes and humorous mannerism that keeps the class lively, to touring us around the NUS dorms and believing that we have the capability of being there one day. Most of all thank you because you taught me the most important lesson and that is as long as you work hard and have the right mindset, you can achieve anything you desire. As my secondary life is drawing to its end, I can say that I am certain I am able to conquer my emaths o level examination and this is because of Mr Ng. Thank you RMSS.
I have joined you since sec 2 mid. I must say it has been a pleasure and honour to be taught by you. It is always a joy to go for your lessons, as they are always so interesting, fun and hilarious. Thank you for rendering the sources and time to help me in my biology and chemistry (especially making us to memorize all your lame but very easy to remember acronyms for chemistry and always giving us extra info. on biology)
Thanks for helping me to love chemistry and biology.
Thank you for being a listening ear whenever I need someone to hear me out. Thanks for always helping me when I need help for these 2.5 years. Thanks for putting up with all my nonsense:))) As my journey with you comes to an end for now, all the best and stay sane and healthy:)))
